BOOK REVIEW: Anupama Chopra’s ‘First Day First Show’
The author’s knowledge and deep understanding of Hindi cinema reflects in her writings
In her book on Shahrukh Khan – King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema – film critic and journalist Anupama Chopra gives a background of the industry and the business of Bollywood over the years at regular intervals. This helps in understanding the backdrop against which the star is emerging, his decisions and risks, and eventual rise as a superstar. Chopra’s knowledge and a deep understanding of Hindi cinema reflect in her collection of writings bound together in her latest book, First Day First Show – definitely an account ‘from the Bollywood trenches’, as the tagline goes.
What makes the book stand apart is the total lack of bitchiness and animosity, perhaps because the author is also the wife of a successful filmmaker (Vidhu Vinod Chopra). Imagine, she must be in on the juiciest gossip (though she may deny it) and yet, she has to carefully draw a line between her professional and personal lives. Click here to read more -

Before Delhi Belly begins, you see the trailer of Ram Gopal Varma’s next film, Not a Love Story, with a punchline that reads: ‘A story from the heart but not for the fainthearted’. That better describes Delhi Belly! Sitting through all the ‘crap’ that happens onscreen is no joke – with close-ups of male bum cracks, excreta and farting sounds all through, plus swear words and simulated sex scenes.

Shahrukh Khan has always maintained a very ‘loyal to my wife’ image in tinseltown, even as he romanced so many beauties on the big screen. Yet another shaadi flick from Bollywood – and Yash Raj Films. This time, starring Katrina Kaif, Imran Khan and Ali Zafar. While the film’s title (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) might make you cringe and think it’s a version of Sorry Bhai, it’s not. Neither is it in the genre of Band Baaja Baaraat or Hum Aapke Hain Koun! Gautam Rajadhyaksha, Bollywood’s most celebrated photographer, passed away after a massive heart attack in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday, September 13. Rauf Ahmed, former editor of magazines like Filmfare, Zee Premiere, Screen, etc, was one of the photographer’s closest associates and among the first to recognise his talent. Rauf says, “When I took over as the editor of Filmfare in 1986, it was a very old-fashioned magazine and I revived it. Gautam had a very important role in this. He brought in a pictorial quality very rare in film magazines. Earlier, there was more focus to show the person’s achievement rather than how the picture was.” Click here to read more -
