Mani Kaul: RIP
It is with profound sadness that Cineswami notes the passing of Rabindranath aka ‘Mani’ Kaul, a true auteur of Indian cinema. Bollywood fans may not have heard of him at all, save the tenuous connection with Shahrukh Khan
In 1991, Kaul made a television mini-series Ahmak (Idiot) based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s masterwork and Khan had a key role in it. This was, of course, long before Khan attained superstardom. In 1975, Kaul made the masterly Duvidha that was remade in 2005 by Khan’s Red Chillies production house as Paheli, starring Khan himself in a double role alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji. Paheli was ostensibly directed by Amol Palekar but in reality it was ghost directed by Khan. Click here to read more -

Injured ‘RA.One’ animator Charu Khandal begins to speak and eat
On March 25, when Charu Khandal was brought into hospital after an accident, her last words before slipping into a coma were, “Someone please water my plants or they’ll die.” The animator, who had worked on Shahrukh Khan’s film RA.One, has had a successful surgery since and may soon be shifted out of the intensive care unit. The otherwise vivacious and cheerful 28-year-old girl began talking on Monday after a month and half. And the first thing she said was, “Doc, can I have some greenery around here.”
Charu who was the victim of a drunk driving case has now started consuming solid food. After a successful spine surgery, the animator is still paralysed neck down. According to the doctors, she is expected to be moved out of the ICU in a week or so post which she will have regular physiotherapy sessions. Her mother, sister and fiancé who’ve taken turns to be by her side through the whole episode finally breathed a sigh of relief and shared pictures of Charu smiling and whistling.Click here to read more -

‘RA.One’ animator Charu Khandal’s surgery successful
Charu Khandal, who was in a critical condition after an allegedly drunk driver hit her, underwent neck surgery yesterday (March 29). The surgery has been successful and renewed hope for her full recovery. However, her friend Vikrant Goel’s condition is said to be still serious.
Charu is an animator with Shahrukh Khan’s Red Chillies production house and is part of the team that won the National Film Award for Best Special Effects for the work they put in on RA.One. In fact, she and her friends were returning from a celebratory dinner when a black Honda City, allegedly being driven by a drunk driver, rammed into the rickshaw injuring the trio early Sunday at northwest Mumbai’s Oshiwara locality. Charu Khandal, 26, suffered multiple fractures and injuries to her spinal cord in the accident early Sunday (March 25). Her sister Ritu was stable as she suffered minor injuries as did the autorickshaw driver. Vikrant is reported to still be in a critical condition. Shahrukh Khan visited Charu and her family at the Kokilaben Ambani Hospital as soon as he returned to Mumbai from London. Charu was engaged to be married by the end of this year.
