Kakki Sattai movie review: Sivakarthikeyan shines as a cop!

The first release of actor Sivakarthikeyan in 2015, Kakki Sattai opened to high expectations.

Produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Productions and music by Anriudh, the movie is directed by Durai Senthil Kumar whom Sivakarthikeyan worked with in Ethir Neechal. In the genre of action comedy, Kakki Sattai shows us how both the director Durai Senthil Kumar and actor Sivakarthikeyan can adapt themselves to a different genre.

What it’s about:

In this movie, Sivakarthikeyan plays a cop for the first time in his career and it’s also the first time that he has played an out-and-out action role per say. The movie revolves around how a young man becomes a cop and just fools around till his life takes a serious turn. He wants to then get rid of an evil in society – in this case illegal organ donation – and the movie takes us through the problems he encounters in this process. However, he does manage to solve the issues and make good his police department. The movie also has a romantic angle – Sivakarthikeyan falls in love with Sridivya when he meets her in a hospital while investigating illegal organ donation.

What’s good:

Sivakarthikeyan has definitely evolved as an actor over the last two years and this movie proves it. He has improved across various departments like dancing, action and even taking to serious roles like a cop where he can prove he can act rather than just ham. The first half of the movie is engaging but picks up pace only in the second half. Anirudh’s music is definitely a plus for this movie especially Kadhal Kan Kattudhe which is great to see on screen. Sridivya is a good actress but doesn’t have too much to do here. Bollywood actor Vijay Raaz plays the villain and being a seasoned actor has done his role well. Though this is not a big budget film, the cinematography and locales where they have shot are pretty good.

What’s bad:

The story unfortunately is not new by any means nor is the treatment. Director Durai Senthil Kumar has tried his best to keep the story engaging but what perhaps lets him down in some ways is the story. With a running time of 2 hrs and 37 mins, the movie doesn’t drag but it doesn’t keep you on the edge of your seat either. In terms of technical aspects, the editing by Noor Azwan could be better.

What to do:

Despite these flaws, the movie is a must-watch for Sivakarthikeyan. He has excelled in the role of Mathimaran and carries the film on his shoulders. The actor is always a delight to watch on screen and this movie shows that he can play diverse roles. The movie has gotten off to a good start at the box office and this shows that Sivakarthikeyan is going to have a great 2015! It also looks like Wunderbar Productions have a winner on their hands.
