Malaika Arora Khan: From Munni to Anarkali!

Designer Rick Roy reveals how he transformed B-town’s item queen from desi belle to disco babe in her latest number in Sajid Khan’s Housefull 2

The video of B-town’s item lady Malaika Arora Khan’s latest song and dance number, Anarkali disco chali from Housefull 2, is out. Once again it sets pulses racing and heartbeats going dhak dhak. While most of the credit for the sizzling act goes to the sensuous lady’s sexy moves and choreographer Farah Khan’s inspiration, there is one more person who deserves a mention for upping the hot-o-meter in the song: designer Rick Roy, who dressed the dancing sensation in sexy cholis and short ghaghras in the popular item song from Dabangg. It must have been a tough task, with the taskmasters Farah and Malaika herself having decided views on the look they wanted? Rick denies any pressure where Anarkali was concerned. He said, “The only brief Farah gave me was that Malaika had to look hot in the song and that it shouldn’t look and feel like Munni. So instead of opting for only Indian or Western designs, we decided to mix and match styles.”

In the song Malaika – or Malla, as she is fondly called by Rick and many others – makes her appearance in a striking sheer lime green and red and backless anarkali dress, then shimmies into a shimmering silver short frock, followed by a blue skirt and bustier and finally a red tasselled dress. The young designer, who has been working with Malaika since 2004, reveals that it wasn’t a cakewalk to dress the star. “Farah and I were shooting two songs back to back, one with Malaika (for Housefull 2) and the other with Chitrangda (for Joker). I was making clothes just a day before the shoot. It was Diwali, so I actually stitched some outfits myself,” Rick remembers. “It was a crazy time, but it turned out well.” We agree, especially since the song is fast climbing the popularity charts.

But will Anarkali steal Munni‘s thunder? You tell us…
