Kaala box office collection day 1: Rajinikanth’s film beats Mersal; rakes in Rs 1.76 crore and becomes the highest opening day grosser in Chennai

Rajinikanth‘s Kaala hit the screens across India yesterday (June 7) and even though only the Tamil version was released on a full fledged scale, the film has started off with a bang. In fact, after housefull early morning shows, the movie had even seen a major dip in occupancies, but looks like it still managed to grow over the day and has performed phenomenally well at the box office, especially in Chennai. The gangsta drama managed to rake in Rs 1.76 crore on the first day in the city and with that, Kaala has become the highest opening day grosser in Chennai after beating Thalapathy Vijay’s Mersal. Huge isn’t it? Talking about this feat, trade analyst and industry tracker – Ramesh Bala mentioned on Twitter, “#Superstar @rajinikanth’s #Kaala storms the #Chennai City Box Office. Creates a New All-time Box Office Record for Day 1 opening – Rs 1.76 crore.”

Considering that Kaala had a lesser buzz than Mersal and the film wasn’t well promoted, it has performed phenomenally well. In fact, with the people and critics raving about the movie, we expect a decent word of mouth publicity to grow and with that, people will be compelled to watch it. This will help not only help the film to grow, but also collect a larger amount at the box office. But will it be the highest opener for a Tamil film across India? And will it also become the highest opening weekend grosser in Chennai? Well that’s something we will have to wait and watch.
