Great Grand Masti makers rejoice as CBFC’s cuts are upturned by Film Tribunal

It looks like the power of the CBFC is diminishing day by day

After the honourable High Court’s historic judgment reversing the cuts in Abhishek Choubey’s Udta Punjab that were ordered by the Central Board of Film Certification, another judgment reversing the CBFC’s Revising Committee’s cuts for Indra Kumar’s sex comedy Great Grand Masti, proves the growing redundancy of the CBFC.

In another benchmark decision, the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (a.k. a the Tribunal) upturned all the cuts ordered by the CBFC. Says a well-informed source, “The Examining Committee (EC) had found many scenes and dialogues in Great Grand Masti highly vulgar and objectionable. Rather than go to the Revising Committee(RC) the makers went straight to the Tribunal appealing for a restoration of the cuts. The Tribunal asked to be shown three recent sex comedies Mastizaade, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 and Grand Masti. Based on the content that was allowed in these three sex comedies the Tribunal restored most of the cuts in Great Grand Masti and passed the film with an ‘Adults’ certificate.”

Interestingly, the Tribunal asked the makers of the film to make voluntary cuts. All the cuts ordered by the EC were restored. Says a source, “The makers were given the prerogative to take voluntary cuts. They made six-seven token cuts and came back to the Tribunal who passed the film without further ado.”

Great Grand Masti is the third film in the Masti series. Both the films were extremely successful with Grand Masti raking in more than Rs 100 crores at the box office. It stars the same trio of actors with a new set of actresses.
