Music director Mycheal Danna took home the award, even as Oscar-nominated singer Bombay Jayashri was accused of copying the song Pi’s lullaby from a Malayalam classic
Composer Mychael Danna won the Best Original Score for a motion picture award for Life of Pi at the 70th edition of the prestigious annual Golden Globe Awards held in Los Angeles on January 13.
Just a day before Danna won the Golden Globe, singer Bombay Jayashri, whose Pi’s Lullaby got an Oscar 2013 nomination of Best Original Song, was accused of plagiarism. Jayashri has written the Life of Pi number.
According to reports, a trust, named after 19th century Carnatic musician Ravi Varman Thampi aka Irayimman Thampi, alleged Pi’s lullaby is not an original composition, but a direct translation of Thampi’s classic Malayalam lullaby Omanathinkal kidavo. This was, of course, denied by Jayashri.
Danna beat Alexandre Desplat (Argo), Dario Marianelli (Anna Karenina), Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, Reinhold Heil (Cloud Atlas) and John Williams (Lincoln) to walk away with the prestigious trophy at a glitzy gala on Sunday (January 13) night. Directed by Ang Lee, Life of Pi is based on Canadian author Yann Martel’s Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name. It is about the journey of an Indian boy who survives a storm and is left on a lifeboat with a tiger.
