Birthday Special: Suriya’s 7 best romantic numbers!

As Singam actor turns 40 today, I  bring you a collection of seven heart stirring romantic songs of the Tamil star

Born on July 23, 1975 at the household of actor Sivakumar, Saravanan did not plan to be an actor. Yes! Suriya’s real name is Saravanan Sivakumar. After finishing his B Com degree from Loyala College in Chennai, Suriya turned down an acting offer citing lack of interest in acting profession. After working in a garment factory for six months without revealing his real identity, Suriya made his debut under Mani Ratnam’s production Nerukku Neru.

Infact it was ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam who bestowed the stage name Suriya to the actor, which has stuck with him even after 17 year long career in the industry. After tasting success in his debut film, Suriya established himself as bankable star with films like Nandha, Kaaka Kaaka and Ghajini over the years.

Over the years Suriya has donned many avatars. But due to his smoldering good looks, he is considered to be an evergreen chocolate boy in Tamil cinema. Known for his onscreen chemistry with his c0-stars especially with wife Jyothika, Suriya has featured in a number of heart stirring romantic numbers. On his 40th birthday, lets take a look at his seven best love ballads:

Mun paniya – Nandha

Nandha was Suriya’s first success as a solo hero as he ably pulled off his part of an angry henchmen who falls for a refugee girl. The song Mun paniya featuring Suriya and Laila is a soulful romantic track that will melt your heart. The song is beautifully picturised between the two actors where Laila looks cute with her innocent girl act and Suriya conveys strong emotions with just his eyes.

Ondra renda aasaigal – Kakka Kakka

Way before his Singam days, Suriya had superbly played the role of a city cop in critically acclaimed Kakka Kakka. Paired opposite to his real life wife Jyothika, the song Ondra renda aasaigal had touched the zenith of popularity in its days as the couple looked great together in this mildly seductive number. The tune was later used in R Madhavan‘s Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein in the song Dil Ko Tumse Pyaar Hua.

Munbe vaa – Jillunu Oru Kadhal

This song is perhaps one of the all time favourites of die hard romantics. Melodious tune composed by AR Rahman was sweetly crooned by Shreya Ghosal. The picturisation of the song is mesmerising as it captures the essence of college love between a sweet simple girl played by Bhumika Chawla and a rugged college bully played with such conviction by Suriya.

Nenjukul peidhidum – Vaaranam Aayiram

This heart felt rendition from Harris Jayaraj for Gautham Menon’s Vaaranam Aayiram is like food for love starved heart. The song which showcases first love has some amazing guitar riffs playing in the background as a smart looking Suriya elaborates the characteristics of his love played by Sameera Reddy. Nenjukul Peidhidum became the official background song for every boy who was in love with a girl.

Vizhi moodi yosithal – Ayan

Sung melodiously by Karthik, Vizhi Moodi from KV Anand’s Ayan is the romantic song of the decade. Picturised on Suriya and Tamannaah, the song showcases the playful banter between the duo. The fact Suriya and Tamannaah looked stunning together added a zing to the song.

Oru malai – Ghajini

While there is no doubt that Ghajini established Suriya as an action star, this AR Murugadoss film had many soul stirring numbers. While Sutrum Vizhi was immensely popular, my favourite song from the film was the peppy number Oru Malai. One just cannot miss Suriya’s amazing chemistry with Asin in the song.

Mun andhi saraal – 7 am Arivu

Two great looking actors – Suriya and Shruti Haasan got together for AR Murugadoss’ 7 am Arivu, which resulted in some lovely romantic scenes between the two. The  soft soothing song Mun Andhi is not just the best song from the film but is clearly one the best songs of Suriya’s career.

Suriya might be concentrating on action flicks right now, but he will forever stay the chocolate lover boy in the minds of the masses. We wish the evergreen chocolate boy of Tamil cinema a very happy birthday.
