Ahead of Qayamat Ki Raat, birthday girl Ekta Kapoor reveals she is a huge fan of Ramsay horror genre – read exclusive interview

We saw the teaser of Qayamat Ki Raat on TV where Vivek Dahiya and Karishma Tanna are trapped in the clutches of a Tantrik. This is the first horror show made by Ekta Kapoor for Star Plus. Bollywood Life recently caught up with Ekta and asked her about the inspiration behind the show. She said, “Qayamat Ki Raat is a horror – sci-fi show. It is about a girl and a village. I am very inspired by the great movies made in South India like Arundhati.” Later, she revealed to us that she was a huge fan of the Ramsay genre of horror. In childhood, Friday night movie viewing on the VCR meant watching scary Ramsay flicks like Cheenkh, Veerana, Bandh Darwaza, etc. “I am a big fan of the Ramsay films. My show also has kitsch horror. As a child, I was obsessed with kitsch horror films. I loved flicks like Cheenkh, Do Gaz Zameen Ki Neeche and Samri was my favourite character. In fact, Friday nights were all about watching horror flicks in VCR screaming away,” she reminisces. Ekta says that she conveyed her love for Ramsay films to Anu Ramsay, who works with a leading network. She also has another show coming up, Dil Hi Toh Hai on Sony TV. “It is a modern updated family drama. It is a show that should have been made earlier. Kyunki was a great base post that we saw an inclination towards socially relevant shows like Balika Vadhu. It was a fab show that got love from urban audiences as well. The serial resulted in many more shows for the semi-rural and rural belt but the modern family show never got made. The Kyunki’s only got a bit updated. Yes, we have the big houses but the conversations between members is not modern. My web-series Home is about an urban modern family. It is directed by Habib Faisal. It is an interesting family drama that talks about what kids feel for parents, which is not always love. Piku and Hindi Medium were also family dramas but they had real sentiments. Dil Hi Toh Hai is in the Kapoor and Sons space though it is not as radical. It is about an urban and emancipated family. On the show, we will mothers and teen daughters have a conversation about sex, girls talking to parents about boyfriends and the issues that a son has due to trauma. The hero is a complex character. We are all products of our childhoods. It is what a modern family drama should be.” (Also Read: Karan Kundra is the new male lead of Dil Hi Toh Hai; heads to Lavasa for promo shoot; read EXCLUSIVE details!)

She further added, “More than being realistic, the conversations will be of today. I have kept the melodrama as it is for TV but I have broken away from a lot of cliches as well. Dil Hi Toh Hai is an experiment.” BollywoodLife wishes Ekta a great year ahead and hopes that both her shows are resounding successes.
