On his 41st birthday of the Tamil superstar, we list seven landmark films in Suriya’s career that made him a household name and more…
If you make a list of superstars who are ruling Kollywood right now, Suriya would definitely make it to the top cut right there with Ajith, Vijay and Dhanush. He may not have been very consistent in delivering hits, the actor has given some memorable performances that has made him everyone’s darling! This year, especially, he rocked with a scintillating performance in 24 (more on that later).
On the occasion of his birthday, let look at seven films in his career that made him the roaring star that he is today:
Kaakha Kaakha
Remade in Hindi as the John Abraham-Genelia D’Souza starrer, Force, KK was a defining moment in Suriya’s life. This Gautham Menon flick was a unique thriller with some great music and fantastic performances by Suriya and his real-life partner, Jyothika. If we say this movie made him a superstar, we won’t be far from the truth.
Pithamagan
Though Vikram won the National award for this film, it was Suriya’s happy-go-lucky act that made this drama worth watching. His chemistry with Laila and Vikram is so endearing, that you feel a huge hole in your inside when he meets his untimely demise at the hands of the baddies!
Ghajini
Aamir fans can troll me, but I would go for Suriya’s superb portrayal of the amnesiac killing machine over Aamir’s performance, any day. And I am sure even Aamir would agree with me!
Vaaranam Aayiram
When Suriya joins hands with Gautham Menon, there is magic waiting to be happened. After Kaakha Kaakha, they came together in this family drama that had Suriya playing father and son, and he was excellent in both the roles! Seriously, Suriya, why do you waste yourself in mindless entertainers like Massu…when you had these films in your kitty?
Ayan
A few hurt fans could say that Ayan was the reason Suriya began to lean towards mass entertainers, though I would go with the next one in this list. Ayan was unlike any of Suriya’s recent entertainers – it’s thoroughly enjoyable and fast-paced,and his chemistry with Tamannaah Bhatia is a treat to watch!
Singam
The role that made Suriya an ISO certified mass superstar! Be it his unique mustache or his loud mouth-liners or his fiery eyes as he kicked the villains in completely OTT style, Suriya proves here that he can stand up to Vijay and Ajith, when it came to masala stuff!
24
Suriya was seen in a triple role in this sci fi flick – a meek scientist, his street-wise son and his evil twin brother – and in each roles, he rocked! He was, especially, good as the villain, Atharva. It also helped matters that Vikram M Kumar’s fine direction and tight screenplay also played to Suriya’s strengths.
